Crill Canavan was established in June 1992. Founder partners Geoffrey Crill and Carol Canavan were both at Jersey law firm Crills when they left with a team of 16 others to start a new type of law firm.
Geoffrey Crill had developed an enviable reputation in property, working both commercial and residential. Carol Canavan specialised in all aspects of private client work. Both had loyal client followings which came with them to the new firm.
One of their Crills colleagues who left with them was Advocate Nuno Santos-Costa. He quickly established a significant litigation department specialising in international commercial work.
The firm grew quickly, doubling in size in its first two years. Today it has seven partners and 57 other lawyers, legal and support staff. Since its inception, the firm has witnessed many changes to Jersey’s legal landscape. Local commercial transactions have become more complex and the introduction of sophisticated corporate structures has added a new dimension to the lawyer’s work. International interest in Jersey has also grown and the firm now works extensively with law firms and barristers’ chambers in other jurisdictions.
Although the firm has grown significantly, the partners remain committed to maintaining the philosophy and approach with which it was started. It prides itself on its relaxed professionalism and places great importance on the strength of its relationships with clients.
While some Jersey firms have grown large and opened offices in other jurisdictions, Crill Canavan remains firmly focused on Jersey, working with both local clients and organisations with interests in the Island.
